SearXNG

SearXNG is the Homelab's private search engine. It forwards your search to DuckDuckGo without DuckDuckGo seeing your IP address or device, and shows the results without ads or tracking.

Address: https://searxng.netbird.garagengang.de

You do not need an account. The page is only reachable while NetBird is connected on your device.

Set it as the default search engine

Afterwards every search from the address bar goes to SearXNG, including search suggestions. For every option below, first open the address above once while NetBird is connected. Menu labels may differ slightly between browser versions.

Firefox (Windows, macOS, Linux)

1. Open https://searxng.netbird.garagengang.de.
2. Right-click the address bar and choose Add “SearXNG”.
3. Open Settings → Search → Default Search Engine and select SearXNG.

If the entry in step 2 does not appear: under Settings → Search → Search Shortcuts, click Add and enter:

Chrome, Brave, and Vivaldi (desktop)

1. Open Settings → Search engine → Manage search engines and site search.

2. Under Site search, click Add and enter:

3. On the new entry, click ⋮ → Make default.

Microsoft Edge (desktop)

1. Open Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Search and connected experiences → Address bar and search → Manage search engines.
2. Click Add and enter the same values as for Chrome.
3. On the new entry, click ⋯ → Make default.

Firefox on Android

1. Open ⋮ → Settings → Search → Default search engine.
2. Choose Add search engine and enter: name SearXNG, search string URL https://searxng.netbird.garagengang.de/search?q=%s.
3. Select SearXNG as the default.

Chrome on Android

1. Open https://searxng.netbird.garagengang.de and run one search.
2. Open ⋮ → Settings → Search engine. SearXNG is listed under Recently visited; select it.

iPhone and iPad

Safari does not allow custom search engines. Instead, add a bookmark or a Home Screen shortcut (Share → Add to Home Screen), or use Firefox for iOS: Settings → Search → Add Search Engine with the same search URL as above.

When NetBird is disconnected

Without a NetBird connection every search from the address bar fails. Connect NetBird or temporarily switch to another default search engine.

Preferences

Use Preferences in the top right corner of SearXNG to change, for example, language, theme, SafeSearch, and opening results in new tabs. Preferences are stored only in a cookie in your browser, not on the server. In another browser or after clearing cookies, the defaults apply again.

Help

If no results appear or you see a CAPTCHA notice, DuckDuckGo is temporarily blocking the requests. Try again a little later and tell the administrators if it persists.
